They were cheap all aluminium engines that have aluminium pistons running directly in aluminium bores!
They were made to a price
They tended to be made of low grade alloys that were called pot metal or slag
I stand to be corrected, but that's my understanding of how the term came about.
Syncro, Buzz, Thor and Rogers being some that come to mind.
