Propellers for Cox 049 engines

Postby Tim Hulse » Wed Oct 03, 2007 1:59 pm

Does anyone know of a propeller that works on a cox 049 engine? I would like a 6" 3 pitch that would work with the spring starter. It has been a long time since I messed with 049 engines and cox dosen't sell them anymore. Any info would be appreciated.

Cox prop

I don't know of any 6x3 prop that WON'T work on a Cox 049. The Cox Gray is probably the best but are to find and they break.

Keep an eye on eBay.
I saw some 6x3s there recently. They often come up.

Just took a look and there are some there right now.
Check eBay # 180165300066. Good luck and happy bidding.

cox props

You don't need ebay. 6x3 props are available everywhere. Master Airscrew makes them and so does Top Flite and APC. APC is probably the best of the current manufacturers. Most hobby shops and all the mail order places like Tower and hobby People sell them.

Fully agree Chief. I like APC the best to, but the way Tim spoke he wanted the Cox 6x3s. They were pretty good in their day too.

When I last flew FIJ a couple of years ago I used my 'old stock' 5x3s on TeeDee051, and they seem to work really well, but probably APC would be a lttle better IMHO.

cox prop

The Cox gray was THE best prop but since Cox went out of business they are hard to find. I bought up all the 6x4's, 6x3's, 5.25x4's 5x2.5x3's, and 7x3's I could get my hands on over that last 5 years. Also got the little guys for the 010 and 020's.

The black nylon were OK but not stiff like the grays.

Thanks for the feedback all of you, it would be great if I could buy after market new props, but do they have the smaller center hub holes that the Cox engines had?

But of course. Cox props came with an 1/8th inch hole as do all of the other makes. Cox used a 5x40 prop screw.

APC's have a larger hole so you will have to maike an adapter. A piece of the right size fuel line will work. The APC 5.7 x 3 is good. I flew Master Airscrew 6 x 3's cut down to 5 1/2 on TD 049 on CL stunt airplanes.
