Fox 1951 model

Postby max hansen » Mon Jun 30, 2008 9:02 pm

Any of you REAL old timers ever send a 4 bolt head Fox back to the factory because of a leaking head & if so how did Duke fix it ? I have one with 8 head bolts . Looks to good of a job for a backyard mechanic . All holes done with a index mill & a end cutter . Fox fix them like this ? Thanks , MAX H. :?

I remember reading something on that years ago, Max, but I have no idea where now. Either an ECJ or MECA bulletin probably.

I read the same thing recently that Fox did an 8 bolt head repair, I have a 49 Fox 35 that had had this work done to it.

Max,

Before Ted Snow slipped away a few years ago, he mentioned that he'd returned a few 4-bolt/2-bolt Fox 35s (~1950/51) after the backplate punched off in an abrupt return to earth, or the 4-bolt head could have disappeared in a Pringles can...

Fox Mfg swapped with 6-bolt/3-bolt new engines, instead of repairing Ted's damaged ones... Apparently, the 4/2 bolt engines had enough track record for succumbing to excessively hard use that Duke went to the eternal 6/3 layout...

Hadn't heard of 8-bolt heads until ths thread... Seems it would need a whole new head to do that. The head fins and piston baffle would be hard to line up any other way.

Ted Snow, btw, designed the (still very successful) HUMUNGOUS Old Time CL Stunt model, and was a terrific influence in the Tucson, AZ, area for well over 50 years.

Fox 8 bolt

I have this engine on eBay # 260270773003 & have a good top view of the head .The bolts at the N.S.E.&W. positions are the added ones . You can see where the fins have been milled away . Though not perfect I think it was too much for a 16 year old kid in 1951 to do .
This is also the only radial mount plate I have seen .Made by Fox in N.Hollywood , Calif. an Ebay find . Has two different bolt patterns as shown ,always thought the .29 & .35 were the same , guess not . Something different . CYL , MAX H. :D
