Small Glow Engine Idle speeds!!

Postby pipercub6 » Mon Jun 07, 2004 2:35 pm

Hi People,

I have delt with larger glow engines for many years and have had no problems to speak of. However, this is my first small(Magnum .15 XL
R/C) engine and I was wondering if someone could give me more pertinent info than what the instructions have. It's an ABC engine and break-in went really well with RPM's at full throttle with a 7-4(Recommended size) prop of 17.000 RPM, Mid range seems really well with good transition but the idle just seems really high of about 3800 to 4000 rpm for a reliable idle. The instructions call for an operating range of 3000 to 18,000 rpm. so at the top end I'm really pleased with it.
Is the idle on smaller engines such as this common to have that high an rpm. It's my first engine smaller than a .60 size and they normally can go alot lower. Would it also be because of the small size prop. (Master Airscrew F/G). Would a heavier prop nut help? If anyone out there has a similiar size engine please let me know if the idle rpm is normal to be that high. The engine runs really well and if I can get the idle down more I would really like it. Thank You in advance, Pipercub 6

What glow plug are you using? Be sure you have the correct lenght, I don't know if they use a short or long plug.

Will it idle with the battery left on the plug?

Small Glow Engine Idle

Postby pipercub6 » Thu Jun 17, 2004 7:28 pm

hi,

Thanks for the reply, I'm using an OS A-3 glowplug, using 10% cool power. The fuel is fresh, the glowplug and engine are new. It will idle down to about 3400 without the glow igniter on but begins to burble quite a bit.

The most reliable setting is about 4000 with a instant tansition to full throttle.

Thank You Pipercub6

Glow pug

You might try a idle bar glow plug , they seem to work better on my small engines . MAX H.

Small Engine Idle

Postby pipercub6 » Fri Jun 18, 2004 1:55 pm

Hi Max,

Thank you, That was going to be my next attempt. I wil try a Fox with idle bar.
It didn't say in the instructions whether to use a short or long glow plug.
I will just have to check it before I put fuel to it.

Engine idle

You also may need to go to a higher nitro content ,try 15 or 20 %. Max H.

Like Max said you need more nitro. Smaller engines will not behave like their bigger brothers. 17000 top speed is decent performance for sport RC engine. So try some 25% and see the difference. A .15 should use a short idel bar plug. Good luck and try more nitro. Dan

Try Sig for fuel

Postby ekitik » Tue Aug 16, 2005 1:03 pm

SIG had wildcat make a fuel blend for the small engines they sell. They make a really good 1/2a fuel called NVX15/25/35 which would work very well in a 15. It was specially designed for the Norvel Line of engines. Visit the at WWW.SIG.COM and read some.

Years back, I read that early magnum engines, especially the small ones benefit from a slight opening up of the air bleed hole in the carb. One or two numbered drill sizes if memory serves.

Piper

I notice your engine is ABC. Usually to get a low idle from the smaller ABC engines, they need to be well broken in. If it's still hard to turn over the top it may need more run time. Also, how low will it idle if you leave the ignitor on?
