Converting RC engine to C/L engine

Postby racauth » Mon Aug 10, 2009 9:09 am

Saw a Super-Tiger .074 at a local model shop. It is rigged for RC with
2 adjuster screws (idle & high rpm) and throttle lever(for the servo) .

Since Control Line is basically full throttle flight only, why could i
not make and attach an an "adjuster rod" connected to the
engine's throttle lever ? The salesman seemed discouraging to the idea.

1. I would have to attach glow wire.
2. I would start it on low RPM, and adjust throttle lever upward to nearly full throttle for C/L flight and fly it until fuel exhausted.

Is there anything i am missing here other than crafting and attaching
a throttle lever?? or Is there something peculiar to RC throttle engines
and their operation??

thanks

I don't think Super Tigre ever made a .074. Maybe a .74 but nothing that small.

Of course you can wire the throttle wide open and use it on a C/L airplane. I do it all the time. Won't be as powerful as a straight venturi as the choke diameter is usually smaller on R/C carbs for better Idle characteristics. I don't know why your Hobby Shop said not to he doesn't obviously doesn't know much about model engines.

The biggest difference between C/L engines and R/C engines by the same manufacturer is the carb vs the straight venturi.

There is no reason you can't start the engine at full throttle. How do you think you start a C/L engine? Just be careful when starting it.

You're right. It was a different thread but yes you can use an R/C engine on a C/L airplane with no problem.
