Clean and store diesel motor

Postby jc4x4 » Thu Feb 22, 2007 8:43 am

What is the best way to clean the outside of an old diesl motor and what is the best way to free up an old diesel that hasnt run for a few years? After, what is the best way to store a diesel that wont be used regular? Also (Sorry!) whats the best way to clean up a pitted alloy casting? Thanks a lot in anticipation.

Depends. A diesel Guru told me to use WD-40 on the outside of magnesium castings like the early Mills and ED Racers. I use Rislone as an after run oil and long term storage oil for all my engines. Other folks use various air-tool oils. Actually WD-40 has solvents in it and works pretty good for outside clean up. I have used it on inside parts, then washed it off with alcohol and then used Rislone when reassembling the engine. .

Soak it in lacquer thinner or acetone, but not a plastic tank, to remove all the old castor oil.

Lube it well with normal motor oil you put in your car.

You can't 'fix' pitting on the case. Just clean it up with thinner and an old tooth brush.

You can pull them all apart also if you wish to. Good luck. :)
