Yes, you can install a simple pin that will only allow the screw to be rotated 1 revolution. Running the engine first will determine where to set the compression and then you can install your pin. Once you run a diesel you'll soon figure out where to set it. Too much compression will result in overheating and sagging rpm, almost like a lean needle and a terrible pinging noise!

The engine slows down and starts making a knocking noise.
