FK-50 Cylinder and Head removal

Postby bdtsr1 » Sun Jan 28, 2007 8:03 pm

Could someone please help me with removing the cylinders and heads? I just bought this FK-50 MKI and it is really gummed up bad. I saw the small set screw but am not sure how the heads come off. I can't get to the last cylinder base nut due to the pushrods being in the way. Any help would be appreciated.

The set screw is the early version. The screw pushes against a notch in the threaded protion of the cylinder in the tightening direction.

This was later done away with. I would not remove the cylinders from the heads. You have to use a strap wrench and internal collet to hold it. You will have to replace the head gaskets if you remove the heads.

To remove the nuts you can actually remove the rockers and push rods then the push rod tubes will come off by pushing them in one direction, towards the head I think. I don't have one to look at here, I am at home right now, but I know it will push in one direction or the other and pop out.

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes I see how the pushrod tubes would slide to the crankcase for removal. Problem is they are pretty well stuck. Are new pushrod tubes and boot seals available? If so, it may be easier to cut the old ones out and install new ones when putting the engine back together.

How about the cam gear? My nylon one has two teeth broken off.

Same thing there. I do have the idle gear with the roller bearing.

The gear I need is the one between the camshaft gear and the crankshaft gear. Is this the one you have?

I believe the part# is 250/33. Would I need a new mounting block for the metal gear as well # 250/34?
