1/2 A's use fuel very similar to larger engines but generally speaking, smaller engines run cooler and handle better with more nitro. Most people run 15% to 30% nitro for all around flying. I use 20% oil (part castor/part synthetic) and 25% Nitromethane with remaining 55% being methanol. For competition in free flight or racing/speed most up that to 40% with some running 50% or more. For sport flying I would use at least 15% and 25% is not considered "hot" for 1/2 A.

For Cox engines I would use all castor in the mix - no synthetic due to the rod ball joint.

Actually small engines like 1/2A engines give off their heat very quickly so higher nitro is needed to keep them hot. Nitromethane increase heat and that increases power. Nitro is an oxidizer. Cox blue can was 25% and Cox red can racing fuel was 35%. Any good 25% fuel with 20% oil with some castor is fine. Much over 35% nitro can just about guarantee a plug a run and finding Cox plugs is getting difficult and expensive. I bought a good supply of Hi comp plugs from Sheldon when he went out of busines last year but they are my own supply now. As far as the ball and socket joint. Once they are reset with the little Cox tool they seem to not have the problem again.
