Venom

Postby Walker » Wed Sep 29, 2010 11:35 am

Hi all,
I am thinking of bidding on a NIB Venom on ebay for my nascent collection. I have ordered a copy of Anderson's, but it hasn't arrived yet and I'm wondering at which point I should bail out on this auction.

Also, are there other vendors who should be considered to obtain this item. The leap of faith needed to deal on ebay is still a little unsettling for me.

I can only tell you what it says in the Anderson's Blue Book. I would never pay 300 bucks for one, that's for sure.

Frank's books are an excellent guide indeed. Unfortunately many use ebay as a price guide.

An aside note here, Frank recently received the "Hall of Fame" award from the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada. Very fitting award indeed.

That's right Chief, Frank ahs both prices. But what many do is an ebay search of sold items and of course use the highest they can find. I'm not sure if Frank's prices are an average or highest?

Quote:

The eBay prices are final because they're actually taken from "SOLD" auctioned engines over a 2 1/2 year period... selected only from excellent-new-new-in-box engines.

Thats from Frank's book, Frank.

Ahhh. Maybe I should read the book more LOL! Thanks for clearing that up Bruce. Now we know. So, only 1000 were made. I never had one. We're they good runners?

Terrible runners if you didn't switch out the piston. The crowns were made too thin and they would fail(blow up pretty much). After the switch they run incredibly.

What piston did you have to put in then?

I saw quite a few of them in my day and I never heard about that problem.

A TeeDee was usually the substituted piston. The TeeDee was the runner up to the Venom so it made sense to use a TeeDee piston rather that a Babe Bee. The Venom was the last produced engine by Cox and it was also the best preforming alongside the TeeDee depending on the fuel used, load, etc.

I don't know where you get your info but it sure don't jibe with Anderson's. The venom came out in '96 and the Sure Start came out in 97. Other than a balanced crank and a red case they were very similar to the Babe Bees.

I just checked several TD's and Babe Bee's and the pistons were identical.

Has to do with the crowns for the pistons. The Venoms also had hopped up porting, SPI, and high compression. Her is a website you might find interesting.

I've been going to that web site for years.

The crowns of the TD and Babe Bees are the same. Try Anderson's if you want valid info.

As far as high compression, that's just the glow plug. You can put the HiComp plug on any Cox 049 as well as some Norvells and others.
