What's the best way to remove a pressed-in needle valve body

Postby William Hanshaw » Wed Aug 31, 2011 12:07 pm

I have several 1/2A engines with messed-up needle valve bodies that are pressed in (no keeper nut like most larger engines). What's the best way to remove a pressed-in needle valve body without harming the engine or destroying the NV body? Anybody?

A vise and a short length of brass tubing on one side works, but be careful because some spray bars only come out one way. Atwood for example used a NVA assembly that only went in one side.

What Ken said...

A close look at the spraybar might show a "shoulder" on one side. Cox Medallions, as an example... Press these out from the other side, of course.

RE-instaling them is the same process in reverse, pretty much. Take some care to put the spraybar jet where it should be - either straight down the choke airflow passage, or slightly out of sight from the choke opening.

(Choke: the air inlet. If, as on the Cox Medallions, it is tilted forward, use that as a guide to "straight down the choke." Some tests on larger engines have indicated that 'suction' at the jet location is better just out of sight. The spraybar restricts airflow; the greater the restriction, the greater the suction, i.e., the greater the pressure drop from atmospheric. "Straight down the hole" is further around than that.)
