Depends on what kind of engine. OS makes a very good puller for OS engines and all the OS clones. Auto shops sell a battery terminal puller that works with a little modification for a few bucks. Or you can buy the expensive gear puller sets that are available.

What's wrong with pulling the engine apart and tapping the front of the crank with a piece of lead or even a piece of wood?

because that's a good way to ruin the bearings and damage the crank. Plus it doesn't work. That's why OS made the special puller they sell.

Racer

Any luck finding a puller? Try this ... http://www.posilock.com/ManPullers/man102opt.htm
I bought the model 202, 2 jaw, works very nice.
