VINTAGE VEGA SIDE VALVE- ENGINE RUNNING PROBLEMS.

Postby boz » Mon Sep 27, 2010 8:46 am

I've got problems with a vintage British Vega 91 side valve glow engine. It runs quite well with the glow heater attached but as soon as I remove it the engine tries to run but stops after about 5 seconds. I have tried different plugs, different fuel, running it leaner then richer but it makes no difference. I'm begining to think it might have a basic design fault. The fuel I've tried is 10% nitro also 5% with various caster contents. Prop size 14x6. Any suggestions? Don't know what else to try. What is the most common cause of this sort of thing? Any help appreciated as I need to get this engine running properly as it is part of a display of vintage engines. Thanks.

Boz

Try a glow plug with an idle bar. Just a thought.

Thanks Frank. That's the one type of plug I didn't try as the other Vega's I have, a 25, 30 and 60, all ran ok with normal plugs. Will give it a go. If it was a modern OHV 4-stroke, what would you say the problem was ?

That's an indication of a cold plug or low nitro or contaminated fuel. Try an Enya#3 plug.

Hi Boz

What chief said and I may add it is also an indicator of a rich idle mixture, provided it occurs at an idle.
