8702 Engine (Early Style) Outboard

Postby bobv » Mon Feb 13, 2012 6:13 pm

On the 8702 (early style) outboard engine I have - on the lower unit, there is a rudder fin that is missing, below the prop - I am wondering is this will affect the steering or handling of the boat (if this is missing), or does anyone know where I could get a replacement part for this? Thank you!

That would be the older K&B 7.5cc outboard motor. With the skeg removed from the lower unit, you will not have any control over your boat. I recommend you not try as these motors make lots of power and an out of control boat can cause a lot of damage or hurt someone.

The simple solution is to buy a new lower unit halves matched set, part #51-8701. See the exploded view link below.

prather did sell a mod engine kit to use with their Spitfire II outboard rigger that provided an offset skeg. The stock skeg had to be removed and the kit part installed. This might work if you can find the Prather kit.
