old or new 3.5

I have a K&B 3.5 outboard ss# j 45092 is it an old or new style. on the squash band setting i have .05 this motor had no head shim in it, will it
need shims or not :!: . o im new to boats and this forum

.050 is way too much gap. Get it down to .018-.022

Adding shims will increase the gap. So something is wrong with one of the parts. Does the top of the piston line up with the bottom of the exhaust port at BTC (bottom dead center) or does it fall below the bottom of the port?

If it lines up with the bottome of the exhaust port then the head button may have been trimed by someone.
