3.5 ob model 8906

Postby wrdude » Mon May 08, 2006 5:51 am

I picked up a boat and a couple of these outboards. The one has been ran a bit and the other only has a couple tanks through it. I can't get the older one to run right. The carb was varnished real bad to the point i had to heat the body to get the barrel out.All orifices are clear but it will not run right. I am thinking of trying the new motor but i want to make sure i'm setting it up right. I started at a base setting of 4 turns out and am going from there. Clockwise to lean and ccw to richen is this correct?

You do have this carb...

As for number of turns it's just a starting point and it may require 6 or more turns out. Since you have 2 engines and one runs ok, swap the carbs, this would give you a clue if it's a carb or engine issue.

yep that's the carb. the one in question is the gold and the new one is black. I've put the new one on the boat now but haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Just put the black carb on the old motor. Seems to run better but i have to wait a couple days to get it out to the pond. I have started at 4 turns out and will go from there.

Alright i tried out the new carb. Seemed to run pretty good. Now where can i order a new carb to replace the one i took of my other motor? Seems to be a bit tricky to tune as i can't tell if it's lean or rich. ANy pointers?

The Gold one should work good on it. I would suggest trying a new gold one. 80-8902

I just called you guys yesterday and ordered one as well as some other bits. thanks. Now when i hold it wide open it goes but then after a maybe 10 seconds it wants to die out then if i let off just a bit it picks up and goes again. any clue if this sounds rich or lean?

If it's rich it will sound like it doesn't max out on RPM's. If it's lean it goes much higher on RPM's and dies out after a few seconds. Try to run 40% nitro and it will be very reliable on the water.
