K&B 3.5 Outboard / Crankcase & Sleeve Clearance

Postby USMC » Tue Jan 06, 2009 10:25 pm

Hi ,
I have a K&B 3.5 Outboard Engine that has ( K 94 305 )
stamped on one side.

when I removed the head I notice the sleeve was rasied and not flushed with the crankcase and there was a shim in place on the threaded spacer.
is this normal? there is a gap between the crankcase & head spacer and you can see the threads on the head bolts.

shouldn't this be flushed? (the sleeve with the crankcase)

I will have to tear it down again for a pic. if this will help.

Thanks,
USMC & Viking...! & Little Jack...! :)

You lost me here
"there was a shim in place on the threaded spacer"

There is a shim on top of the sleede and you can see the screws when it is together.

Look at these links...

http://www.mecoa.com/kb/89/8907-exp.pdf

and if you look at the first pic here you can see a little space between the head and case.

"there was a shim in place on the threaded spacer"

my bad I should have said "Head button" plus a copper shim.

here are some pic's which show the raised sleeve and is not flushed.
Itryed to tap it down and it will not go down.

the pic on the right is a other crank case & sleeve that fits just right.

I believe the sleeve has a lip on the outside that coincides with a relief machined in the crankcase which is the way it was designed at one point in time. The head button fits into the sleeve and the brass head gasket frms the seal. The fact that the cylinder head doesn't come into direct contact with the crank case and that you can see the head bolts isn't a problem.

Thanks Steve
I just never seen one like this before.
I also could not remove the sleeve its in there real good.
I know about baking it in the oven to remove the sleeve.

Take Care,

I was told of a neat trick to remove a sleeve without heating or damage was to use a copper glow plug washer. With the cylinder head removed, drop the washer on top of the piston when it's at bottom dead center. Slowly rotate the crank raising the piston with the washer on top just protruding slightly into the exhaust port. With the washer in contact with the piston and the sleeve slowly and carefully continue rotating the crank until the sleeve is gently lifted out of the crankcase a few millimeters. You then back off the crank and remove the washer. You should then be able to get a grip on the sleeve to gently remove it. A twisting motion might be needed as well. Just go slow.
