When and how to replace bearings?

Postby ericmcrory » Sun Apr 19, 2009 10:29 pm

I just got my boat out of the basement after sitting for about 10 years. I took the engine apart to examine it and found rust inside, specifically around the bearing casings. I cleaned up the rust as much as possible with denatured alcohol and WD40 but I don't know if it's a good idea to run the engine becaause I dont' know if the bearings are damaged. Everthing seems to spin well after cleaing. I could not figure out how to remove the bearings and could not find the answer on the Tech questions FAQ page. (K&B .40 Marine engine)
Do bearings need replacement?
If so, how do I remove them?
Any help would be appreciated.

It just takes a feel for it. Roughness is the main sign. Noise will result first with rough bearings then failure.
