veco .61 with pump

Postby frank » Fri Sep 17, 2010 1:10 pm

Hello. I have an old Veco .61 R/C with a pump on the back, attached directly to the engine. All the engine says is: VECO 61. It at one time had an exhaust baffle, but it is gone. There is no muffler. I thought I would post a few questions before running it.
The compression seems low. Is this normal for this engine? Should I try to get the pump working, or is it too old? Do I need to have some kind of back pressure to get the pump to work?It hasn't been run in over 25 years. I have an 11/6 prop. Also a 12/6. Does it matter? Finally, what fuel does it prefer?
Thank you for your time.
Regards,
Frank in Montana

It's the forerunner of the K&B 61. Exact same engine. There is nothing to do with the pump. Either it works or it doesn't. The diaphragm may be shot after sitting all these years. The only way to find out is to run it.

The compression may be low because these engines used a dykes ring. Flip it backwards and see if the compression doesn't improve.

11x7 or 12x6 prop is fine.

It ran, and the pump works! I flooded it badly, but got it started by hand. The Perry carb seemed to be leaking, so I took it off. It was missing a screw under where the fuel line attaches to the carb. I don't know what it is for, so I just serewed it in all the way. I had a spare carb, so took a screw off it and that seemed to solve the problem. A little fuel does seep out of the front of the crankcase, but I assume that is normal. I flooded it again, so I closed the needle valve and flipped it until it ran out the fuel, then opened the nv about two turns, and used an elect. starter. Got it running easily two more times The carb may need a little tweeking, but other than that, it ran quite strong. Maybe I'll build a Dirty Birdy for it!
One more question: What would be the right muffler for this engine?
Thank you so much....

K&B made a muffler for this engine. Check with Mecoa.

Veco 61 muffler

MECOA might have one, but it is $40.00 plus shipping. Think I'll look around...

Can a Veco pump be successfully mounted to a K&B body and used successfully?

They are the same engine. K&B bought out Veco and Mecoa bought K&B.

Most of the back cover perry pumps go bad after so many years as the rubber diaphragm hardens up.

So true. The trick is to keep the intake and output connected with a piece of rubber tubing.
