What you are experiencing is completely normal. The ABC piston/sleeve has a slight taper as the piston reaches the top of the stroke. One way to help starting is to loosen the glow plug slightly when turning over the motor. I know that McDaniel used to sell a torque Ni-starter that acted both as a glow plug driver but was also a glow plug wrench. You'd loosen the plug for starting and then once running tighten with the torque starter wrench.
