HP 40 Piston sleeve assemblies

Postby raglafart » Mon Sep 01, 2008 6:19 am

Hi
Can you tell me if any of the HP 40's were made using a plain steel sleeve with a Dykes ring please.
Many thanks
John

Plain steel yes, but never a dykes ring. Always a pinned conventional ring. Most, not all, sleeves were hard chrome plated steel or brass.

The HB used a dykes ring. Are you sure it's an HP Made in Austria?

Hi, I have to differ on the previous answer. I have a number of HP40's, all original Austrian produced examples, including gold cup, silver star, in both front and rear induction configurations. All are fitted with steel liners and all are fitted with dykes rings.
I'm unaware of any of the liners being plated, hard chrome plating is normal reserved for brass liners when used in ABC configurations.
HP were always famous for the dykes ring configuration, it provided a very compact, lightweight and powerful 40 size engine which was particularly appealing in the early pylon racing days (70's). (I still use a 40 R on an original HP pipe in a very light multiboat and a front induction version in a tethered hydroplane capable on a good day of 85 mph!)It was comparable with the OS 40 SR (also with dykes ring) and was only surpassed when the likes of the ST 40X, rossi's and OPS's became available.
Incidentally, the HP40 dykes ring is interchangeable with webras 40 dykes ring
Regards
Dave

Trust me. Never Dykes rings in HP 40's and yes there are many steel sleeves that are chrome plated. Including the K&B .61, HB Blitz 40 & 61, HP Silver Star .61 and .40

The later Gold Cups had crome plated brass sleeves. The HP GC .61 had a dykes ring. NEVER the .40

HB .40 & .61 had dykes rings. NOT the blitz versions.

Maybe you have a HP 40 with a mixture of Webra and HP parts.

I have oened HP since the early 1990's and have never seen a 40 with a dykes ring nor does any of the documentation from day one show a dykes ring .40
