Unknown engine

Postby Equuleus » Tue Jun 10, 2008 4:47 pm

I have recently inherited and engine the identity of which is new to me.
It's displacement is .9cc and above that number, which is on the crankcase, is a capital "R."
Anyone have an ID?

A NovaRossi 0.9 I guess that should have been shewn as .09 but the case does indicate
R
O.9

Nicely made engine, reputedly very fast. I've had one here NIB for years with intention of replacing a TD.09 in a F/F . .but never got around to it.

Rossi did indeed market an 09.
Bruce de Chastel was the Rossi importer in Australia back in the late 80's early 90's. He represented Australia in a few world pylon champs but that's another story.
He brought in some Rossi 09's for our 1/2A pylon comp after they increased the capacity of the engines from 049 and 051's to 0.10's
They look identical to the Cipolla 09's and I'm guessing there was probably some co-operation with the design and manufacturing. Maybe Cipolla bought the tooling from Rossi? from what I remember they were both out at about the same time though. The Rossi had an R on the case. The Cipolla engines in my collection have a C on one side and an i or j on the other.
They had TD style porting and a plain bearing shaft.
They were quick, but not as quick as a modified 10FSR using a nelson button head and some timing changes.

I'd post a pic of my NovaRossi .09 if I could figure out how to bring it from file to here!

He said .09 CC's and it's cubic inches. Rossi and Nova Rossi are two dofferent companies.

Very true on both counts, Bruce ... it's really up to Equuleus to confirm whether cc's or cu.ins

If cc's then not any Rossi. If cu.ins then I'd look towards the NovaRossi, especially as it has R 0.9 cast on the case to possibly cause confusion. Many could erroneously associate it with Rossi due to greater familiarity with that name ..

Chief, I think we all read the .9cc as an 09, we are all human and typo's are not uncommon!? we knew what he meant.
For what it's worth, Nova Rossi wasn't around when these were made which was late 80's early 90's
Rossi did make an 09 or 1.5 cc glow which was identical to the Cipolla that I've picutered above. I had one and sold it before I used it. I bought it from the Australian importer at the time.
