What is the recommended glow plug for a HP Gold Cup .40 rc engine using 10% nitro and 20% castor oil fuel?

Glow plug question

Postby strick1940 » Sat May 26, 2012 2:31 am

I have two 32 year old engines. HP Gold Cup 40 rc and an OS Max 60 rc. I believe these engines have steel pistons and ball bearing races. I will be using Wildcat Jet-A fuel 10% nitro and 23% castor oil. I'm thinking of using a #8 long reach glow plug with an idle bar. Will this plug be best for this application?

What OS 60??? They made a 60FSR which was schnuerle ported and a 60H which wasn't.

Glow Plug

The OS Max is 32 years old, pre-schnuerle. I'm not sure if the engine will not kill the glow plug on fast idle up or maintain a good low idle. Fox makes a #8 with the idle bar. I guess I will have to experiment. Thank you for your help.

The OS 60FSR came out in 1974 which makes it 38 years old. A lot older than your 32 year old engine. The 60H was discontinued when the 60FSR came out and the 60FSR was schneurle ported.

If it's a 60FSR it will have SR on the crankcase. If not it's an 60H

It does say MAX-H OS 60 on the case. Made in Japan.
Does that mean it's a non-schnuerle port engine?

Yup, that it does. If it has an exhaust baffle, it could be as old as 1967. Still, any long reach plug will work fine. Like I said, I use Enya#3's in all my glow engines, including the one you have.

The K&B Idle bar 4520 plug is the best for the OS and the K&B 7311 for the HP 40

I would say that the Japanese companies know what plugs are the best in their engines. Being as Japanese engines use medium reach plugs and Japanese plugs are medium reach it would seem that would be the way to go. The best plugs for the average Jap engine is the Enya#3 or the OS#8.

Enyas come with the #3
